In the series Shift, Max Brenner explores sensory overload and disorientation within urban subway systems. Drawing from photographic research of underground networks across different metropolises and decades, he fragments, copies, and merges figures, bodies, and fleeting impressions into a dense, abstract visual fabric. Individual scenes dissolve into one another until no clear focal point remains, forcing the eye to wander continuously through the image.

Like the subway ride itself, the composition becomes an accumulation of simultaneous impressions: bodies, movement, speed, noise, and proximity. Passengers appear compressed, detached, and almost machine-like, while individuality gradually disappears within the mass. Intense signal colors amplify this sense of overstimulation.

Painting, and drawing are fused through textile screen printing and spray paint on canvas, allowing different visual layers and boundaries to dissolve into one another.
