The wooden relief installation The Gap extends the thematic field of Brenner’s work Who Knows? At first glance, the scene shows children playing on a playground with spring riders, slides, and climbing structures. In the foreground, however, a masked, uniformed figure equipped with night-vision goggles appears.

The identity of the figure remains ambiguous - military personnel, a member of a special unit, or an anonymous authority. This uncertainty destabilizes the scene: are the children being protected, or are they in danger? What begins as a familiar image gradually shifts into one of unease. In The Gap, the fragile boundary between safety and threat becomes visible, transforming an ordinary playground into a space charged with tension and latent fear.

Black and almost materially unidentifiable, the work appears like a monolith or timeless relic. Its deeply carved motifs seem made to endure, preserving fleeting moments as permanent traces. The object becomes a silent archive of time, standing still while everything around it changes.
